The Diet...Beginning of Week 4

Well, I've ended the first of 2 weeks of eating only meat, fish, poultry and eggs.  Not bad and I've certainly not been hungry at all.  Total weight loss for the first three weeks of "The 6 Week Cure" is 9 pounds.  I've settled into a sort of pattern.  On Fridays, my weight will be down, followed by a tiny gain over the next week and then down again to around a pound below the previous Friday.  It's slow and steady and the big payoff is that each week I'm down just a bit more.  It's one more week of only meat and then we can start introducing a few carbohydrates for 2 weeks, but I may go back to the protein shakes plus one meal a day of weeks 1 and 2 in order to drop a few more pounds.  Just have to see where I am at the end of next week.

Day 15

Today is the beginning of week 3 of this diet.  It's time to abandon the high protein shakes and eat meat and only meat for every meal.  We also did our weights and measures today and our waistlines are smaller.  Also, I'm down 8 pounds and Dave is doing about the same.

I'm trying out a number of the recipes suggested in the "6 week cure" book so today I made a big batch of the all meat chili.  It was pretty good.  I made a double recipe so that we'd have leftovers.  Tomorrow will be pork loin. On Sunday I'm considering a roasted chicken or maybe flank steak.  Breakfasts are usually eggs and bacon or sausage and lunch is leftovers.  Today, however, I had lunch out with a friend.  It's not very hard to adjust the selections on the menus of nice restaurants to work with a low carb lifestyle so we were able to have a very nice and filling lunch.  My friend is going low carb, too, so we were on the same page with that.

Beginning of Week 2

It's the first day of week 2 of the "6 Week Cure for the Middle Aged Middle" and I'm happy to report that I'm down 7 pounds.  Thank you Dr Eades.  For these first 2 weeks I have 3 protein shakes per day and only one meal so I chose to have a great lunch each day.  I find myself seeking yummy recipes and today I'm making a shrimp scampi.  Can't wait.

Day 7

I've been reading a bit farther into "The 6 Week Cure" and discovered I really need to have that third shake each day. There are two reasons. The first is that lowering caloric intake too much will set my body into a mode that burns fewer calories and the second is that I add around 2.5g of leucine powder to each shake to prevent muscle loss and it takes 3 shakes to get me there.

I'm still holding at a 6.5 pound weight loss. Tomorrow begins the second week of three shakes plus one meal a day.

On a New Diet

Dave has been researching diet and nutrition for the past year and has come across evidence that shows a low carb lifestyle is where we need to be. I, for one, have always had the best results with a low carb diet, but always reverted to the low fat, high carb lifestyle after losing weight and had the weight come back. Dave, well versed in how to read a clinical study, has been searching through the data of all the nutrition studies done regarding the fat vs. carb conflict and has found that a lot of what we are told about how to eat is not supported by the data in these studies. Recently, he's discovered the work of Dr. Michael Eades and began a diet called "The 6 Week Cure for the Middle Aged Middle". Since joining him on this diet means I wouldn't have to cook much for the first 2 weeks, I decided to get on board and do it with him.

We began the diet on Friday, Feb. 5th, and today, only 5 days later, I'm 6 and a half pounds lighter. Who knew? Dave is down 4 pounds. These first 2 weeks involve whey-protein shakes, 3 per day, along with one low carb meal. Dave chose breakfast for his meal and I chose lunch. I've been having fun choosing what I want to make for myself. So far, I've had scrambled eggs with bacon on one day, a couple days with bison-bacon-cheese patties and today I made herbed chicken thighs sauteed in garlic butter. Very yummy and very filling. Since I fried up 6 thighs and only ate 3 of them, I saved the other 3 for later in the week.

There are more than 5 weeks yet to go with each 2 week period having different requirements. We'll see where I am at the end of those 6 weeks.
