Back to the Written Word

It's really been a while since I last posted a comment or two on this page. Quite a bit has happened. At the end of August we packed out and got on the road to California and on Labor Day weekend we moved into our condo in San Diego. Although we pared down our possessions, we still found ourselves with way too much stuff for a condo only half the size of our former residence, but we're working on getting things to fit. One of the first things we did was to sell our 2 cars to our son and daughter in law and replace it with only one that we now share. So far, it's working out well. Retirement means that with a little planning, we can schedule things so we don't each need the car at the same time.

Our plans to spend a lot of time traveling are coming to fruition. We weren't here three weeks before we hopped in the car and drove north a couple of states to see family. Then, in November, we made our annual pilgrimage to Disney World. We again went north to spend the Christmas holidays with family and we are on the verge of leaving again for another visit north in just a couple of weeks. Our parents are aging and we like to check up on them every 3 or 4 months. Eventually, we'll make that trip to the Grand Canyon like we've been planning to do for so long.

Our main reason for retiring to San Diego was to be nearer our grown children, but a secondary reason was climate. Already this year, we're able to enjoy warm temperatures while friends back in Massachusetts and New York are freezing. Initially, it appeared they'd have a warm winter since January had temps way above normal, but February and March have made up for that and it's shaping up to being one of the coldest winters in 50 years. There isn't too much snow, though, so come spring there won't be many perennials recovering in the gardens. Here, however, I already have a garden growing. I planted lettuce some time ago and have been harvesting it for a couple of months. I've planted sweet peas and the tomatoes are going into their outdoor planter this week. I also put in two lemon trees, one of which already has some lemons ripening on it.

So bit by bit we're getting settled in our new home. We're getting rid of things we thought we'd need or had room for and changing out furniture that's too big for the smaller spaces we're now dealing with. It's all working out and we love it. The zoo is nice too.
